Dentist enjoys job:
It's also his hobby
By Jenny

Dentist
David B. Kagan insists there is no big tooth
statue in the middle of his Boca Raton
living room.
But there might as well be.
Kagan, 41, said his hobby and his profession --
dentistry -- are the same. It's been that
way since he started practicing 15 years
ago.
"I really don't have any other hobbies to speak of,"
said Kagan, 41, who has spent half of the
last six weeks traveling the country to bone
up on the latest dental practices. "I really
don't think my life could get better."
Such sentiments are light years away from those Kagan
expressed as a 5-year-old, shortly after
seeing a dentist whose anesthesia prompted
Kagan's childhood nightmares. It is
perhaps that incident more than any other
that established his commitment to being
sensitive to peoples' fears of dentists.
"I think 50 percent of people are petrified about going
to the dentist,: said Kagan, who has offices
in suburban Boca Raton and Pompano Beach. "I
don't have a sign that says we cater to
cowards, but we try as hard as possible to
make them completely comfortable."
Among those efforts are using needle-free anesthesia
and virtual reality eye glasses, which allow
patients to watch a television show
uninterrupted by a dentist's hands. He also
offers a procedure that allows a patient to
watch deep inside their own mouths by way of
a tiny camera.
"But the main attraction [of dentistry] is I can
completely change how someone feels about
themselves [by] helping improve |
their smile," he said.
Toward that end, he recently participated in a national
Smiles for Life campaign, which raised $1.25
million for St. Jude Chil-dren's Research
Hospital in Mem-phis, Tenn. Dozens of Kagan's
patients received reduced-cost tooth
whitening, which directly benefited the
children's hospital in addition to
brightening smiles.
Bill Strupp, a Clearwater den-tist who travels the
country train-ing dentists in restorative
treat-ment, calls Kagan an inspired
practitioner.
"He's one of those students who took the information
and ran with it," Strupp said. "It's
like when the student becomes the master. It
does me proud."
As for Kagan, who also does extensive dental health
outreach in suburban Boca Raton schools, he
simply said, "I try not to be an average
dentist."
He points out that most people can live completely
dental healthy lives if they get started
early on the right road to pre-vention. That
includes fluoride, brushing, flossing,
sealants and dentist visits every six
months.
While he stresses that he loves dentistry, Kagan said
he does not want to stand solely as an
example of good dentistry. Married to his
dental hygienist wife, Juli, and with one
son, Zachary, 8, he said he wants to stress
to everyone that they should follow their
dreams, no matter what they are.
"I want to let people know that they should do what
they love to do more than anything." he
said. "I really feel like I play, I don't
ever work . . . That's the biggest message:
Find something you really like to do and the
rest will come." |
